What is Microsoft Sharepoint?
(from Dynamics AX Newsletter winter 2006/07)

Microsoft SharePoint will
be increasingly seen as
the glue which integrates
Microsoft applications,
but what is it and what
does it do?
Microsoft Sharepoint is a data distribution portal – think of it as a
notice board. Microsoft is using Sharepoint to publish data from all
of their data sources. This means that in one screen you can see
and interact with data from, for example:
• Microsoft Office documents
• Microsoft Project
• Microsoft Exchange
• Microsoft ERP applications
• Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
• Microsoft SQL server databases
• Microsoft – everything else!
• Non Microsoft Other applications
The tight integration of Sharepoint enables web distribution for all of
the other applications very easily through a single portal. This means
a users I.T. experience should be accessible through a single
browser based application – Sharepoint. It is hard to describe the
application of such a broad based technology – it’s like asking what
electricity can achieve.
Sharepoint has inherent Intranet style functionality including
calendars, document management (version, date and access
controlled), workflow management and much more.
